I don't want to be rude, but how about using https://www.7-zip.org/ ?
It provide almost same GUI + more types of compressions, and also can be used in CLI too.
Bonus is Open Source and Free.
Bonus2: is crossover platfrom.

Almost no one buys a winrar license. (and maybe it's even fun). But no one would want to be a winrar developer...

That's incorrect. Companies buy. They have to. Winrar actually earns a good amount of money from them, so nobody should worry about them
