Set Anisotropic Filtering on your graphics card it will look better. Pretty decent textures.

Not everyone can develop their own core and for those who can't I suggest using the Vanilla Core.

FreeBSD is not another distribution of Linux it's a completely different OS although both are based on Unix. The reason you saw people compiling it for Windows is that YMIR actually started a Windows port long ago. However it was never planned to run on Linux and I don't see any advantage on doing it when FreeBSD is as capable if not more than Linux.
