How does granny work ?

Hi guys can someone explain to me how does granny actually work ? Why some models are seen on different versions and some are not ?

 

Besically I'm using standart version of granny so i guess is 2.4.0.7 and i have some objects for 2.6.0.10 and they work fine but i get syserr about wrong granny version.. next i have another pack of objects for 2.6.0.10 and they don't work.. Same with models 2.8 + they don't work either. So how does it work ? Why some of them work fine some are not ? #JUST_WONDERING.
