Slow game after tabbing

As everybody knows if you keep the game tabbed for a while, when you re open it, it will be very laggy/frozen or just a black screen, and you have to exit the game. Can someone tell me why this happens, give a link for some documentation(i'm sure there is info about this already, but I don't know how to find it) and perhaps some ways to fix it(if possible)?
