Questions about creating a private server

Hello,

after months of searching for a good funny server, I decided to try to make my own one, where paying won't help you evolving. A fairplay pvp server.

The main thing on the server would be the pvp.

My problem is that I don't know how to start this project, I don't know anything about how private servers are working.

I also want on my server some stuff that I haven't seen on other servers.

I would appreciate if you can tell me what I need to know about this project. How to start it, and what should I do if I don't want my project to be a failure.
