What Serverfiles to use to start a new project?

Hey guys, i was inactive for almost 6 years and I want to create my own Server just me and my friends.

As I am  a programmer, I wwant to implement everything myself but I have no interested in upgrading from python 2.2 to python2.7 if you know what I mean.

Which files can you recommend me? I would appreciate a link.
