Hand rigging-3ds Max

Hi everyone!

I have been practicing rigging for some time now. I use physique in 3ds Max to rig the characters. However, when I get to rigging the hands I can not get it to look correct.
In one particular case, I import the mesh and the bones, the bones fit everywhere except the hands. I moved the bones to somewhat fit the hands, but I couldn't get it to fit perfectly.
I then attached the hand mesh to the bones, and it was distorted. I tried attaching the mesh in different ways to the bones, but that did not work either.
My question is, should I be moving the bones to fit the mesh, or should I be moving the mesh to fit the bones before using physique? Am I just attaching the mesh to the bones the wrong way?

I have pictures attached of what I have done and what it looks like when animated in Granny viewer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
